How to spot fake money

The fraudsters often use sophisticated Prop Money Euro printing techniques to make the counter counterfeit cash appear genuine. Running vertically to the left of the portrait is a security thread with the text “usa” and “100” that lights up in pink under ultraviolet light. In a security thread that runs vertically to the right of grant’s portrait, the words “usa 50” show up in yellow under ultraviolet light. A watermark of grant’s face can also be seen from both sides, and the “50” on the bottom right of the front is printed with color-shifting ink. The $20 bill, redesigned in 2003, has security features similar to those of the $10 bill. The background colors are green and peach, but the seals and serial numbers are similar to those on the $10 bill.

The market for counterfeit currency has changed over the last ten years. High quality counterfeit paper can be produced very quickly by skilled printers using traditional offset lithographic methods. However, organised crime groups are also producing digitally printed fakes, using the latest technology and laser or inkjet printing techniques. Offset lithographic printing remains the more serious threat; notes are of a high quality and can be produced quickly. All counterfeits of modern banknotes, including the euro, can be generally recognised without too much difficulty.


Yet this popularity comes at a cost given that the greenback is also one of the most counterfeited currencies. The u.S. Secret service seized more than $500 million in counterfeit money in 2020, for a 40% increase from the year before. There are many security features incorporated into euro banknotes that make them difficult to recreate. Many of these features can be checked manually using the feel-look-tilt test. You can find pre-owned and used fake money from other eras, which would be considered vintage, and it might be worth more than some newer variations.
