Please be warned that there are spoilers in this review with specific regards to the “War of the Green Lanterns” installments that have occurred in both “Green Lantern” #64 and “Green Lantern Corps” #58. If you do not want any of the events in those issues to be spoiled, click away.

The third installment of the “War of the Green Lanterns” takes the turmoil to Guy Gardner, Arisia, and Kilowog. In order to deepen the mystery, heighten the tension, and make the story more enticing, Peter Tomasi focuses in on Guy Gardner after the first seven pages. Guy is seemingly left alone as the impurity has been restored into the Central Power Battery. That impurity, you will recall, is Parallax. This, of course, means bad things for the Green Lantern Corps, many of whom are now in the thrall of Parallax and/or Krona.

Tomasi writes the most relatable Guy Gardner I’ve ever read, and he continues to deliver in this issue. Frustrated and isolated, Guy needs to lash out. Lucky for him, Hal Jordan shows up. The two go at it, again, and for most of their struggle it seems like twice-baked comic rehash, but it has some new wrinkles, and, certainly, a new outcome.

Fernando Pasarin’s art is very much grounded in reality, but when the Corps comes charging in across a two-page spread, that realism pays off in sheer numbers, but those numbers are resplendent with detail on par with that of George Perez (a compliment I do not dispense easily). I found myself mesmerized by that page, straining my memory to determine where I’ve seen some of these Lanterns before. Gabe Eltaeb expertly renders just enough variation in the sea of green to help that spread pop more. Throughout the rest of the issue, Pasarin, Cam Smith, and Eltaeb give the reader a story that is clear, concise, and strong. This is a solid issue from cover to cover.

This third installment of the “War” delivers enough material to recap and push forward the storyline without becoming self-indulgent. There are matters of significance at play here, and the final page of the story is compelling enough to bring me back for the next chapter, even though I’d like to see what these titles can do without an event driving them. This event is at least self-contained (within the Green Lantern core titles), so there’s something to be said for that.
