Iruma Suzuki has had a tough life. His parents are irresponsible, so he must work to earn money to take care of himself. One day, he discovers that his parents have sold him to the demon, Sullivan. Afraid at first, he relaxes when he discovers that the demon merely wants a grandchild. As Sullivan is the headmaster of the demon school Babyls, he enrolls Iruma. However, Iruma soon discovers that as the grandchild of Sullivan, he is now expected to take the throne of Demon King.

Clearly aimed at a young audience, you can see a lot of missed chances in this one, but it is wholesome fun in a surprisingly non-ecchi way. If you are looking for more anime recommendations like Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, then head on down below.

For Fans of Humans Among Monsters

Actually, I Am

Completely on accident, average boy Asahi Kuromine discovers that Youko, the girl he has a crush on, is actually a vampire. According to her father’s rules, she must now quit school, but since Asahi doesn’t want her to go, he agrees to keep her secret. However, it turns out she won’t be the only supernatural being entering his life.

Unlike Iruma, Actually, I Am starts off with a human discovering the supernatural among his classmates. However, from there, the supernatural people in his life multiply. Regardless, both end up as a fun rom-com about dealing with troublesome creatures.

Rosario + Vampire

Due to his bad grades, Tsukune Aono was unable to get into any good high schools. However, at the last minute, he was accepted to Youkai Academy. Unfortunately for him, it is a high school for werewolves, vampires, and other monsters. With the help of a vampire and some other new girl friends that take a liking to him, Tsukune tries to hide his human status from his classmates.

These series actually have quite similar plots. Due to various circumstance, a human finds himself going to a school full of supernatural creatures. While Iruma is aimed at younger audiences and features a cute, but funny lite romance, Rosario + Vampire is more ecchi at times. It is definitely more of a harem show as well.

Kyou Kara Maoh

After saving someone from bullies, Yuri becomes their target. When his head gets shoved in a toilet, he is sucked into another world. There, he is told that because of his black hair and black eyes, he is destined to become the next demon king. The demons view him as unworthy, but after winning a duel by utilizing his newfound magical powers, he becomes slowly accepted.

Both stories find a human surrounded by demons. However, there is no hiding it in Kyou Kara Maoh. What’s more, Iruma had many opportunities to go down a dark path, but skipped them over in lieu for more comedy. Maoh embraced them a little more.

For Fans of Sold to Demons

Black Butler

In his darkest moments, the young Ciel Phantomhive formed a pact with a demon to exchange his soul for those who wronged him. Now this demon poses as his butler and Ciel strives for both success and vengeance in Victorian England.

In Black Butler, it is not so much he was sold to demons so much as he sold himself. Regardless, it begins his new existence. Yet, while both anime series follow young boys, Black Butler is infinitely darker.

Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits

In college, Aoi inherited her grandfather’s ability to see spirits. One day while she was feeding some spirits, a demon appears. It seems her grandfather sold her off to marry a demon to satisfy his debt. Instead, Aoi refuses and works off the debt owed in a bed and breakfast.

Both series feature people sold off by their family, but their fate is not as bad as it seems. Iruma just ends up going to school and Aoi ends up working in a bed and breakfast. In fact, they are both pretty wholesome, with Kakuriyo being a bit more maturely wholesome.

Ancient Magus’ Bride

After being abandoned by her family, Chise Hatori is a 16-year-old teenager without hope. In order to not have to worry about herself, she sells herself to slavers, only to be purchased by Magus Elias Ainsworth. There she is told she will become his apprentice and, in the future, his bride. Together they work together to build a relationship and work to control her own magus powers that will eventually result in her early death.

While Ancient Magus Bride is much darker and more mature, it actually has quite a lot in common with Iruma. A person is sold to demons and thus escape their miserable life, but it was not the fate they were expecting. In fact, their life gets better. However, as the more mature series, Ancient Magus Bride explore a lot of the magical world in an enthralling way rather than just tossing out jokes.

For Fans of Supernatural Rom-Com

RIN-NE

After disappearing into the woods and not being able to recall what happened, Sakura returns being able to see ghosts. In high school, the desk next to hers sat empty until a boy named Rinne suddenly filled it. He has the same mysterious powers, and sometimes people can’t even see him.

While Iruma bonds with a girl at his new school, Rinne features two people brought together with similar powers. It also adds on a nice layer of mystery. Despite that, both series are fun and often cute in their romance.

Karin

Even among her family of vampires, Karin is odd. She produces too much blood and gets frequent nosebleeds. However, after discovering her blood makes people happier, she gives it away using her siblings to alter their memories. However, new classmate Kenta become suspicious of her behavior. What’s more, Karin’s blood reacts oddly in his presence.

Both series feature budding couples that shouldn’t quite work, but they do. They are both brought together through the set up. However, Karin focuses almost purely on comedy and tells the story from a female perspective.

The Familiar of Zero

Louise is a self-absorbed mage at the prestigious Tristain Academy. Unfortunately, she can’t cast magic right and her classmates call her Louise the Zero. One day during a summoning ritual, Louise messes it up again and summons a boy named Saito. At first she treats him as a slave until she discovers a powerful brand on him, the sign of a legendary familiar known as Gandalfr.

While the witches in The Familiar of Zero are hardly monsters, like Iruma, you find a human summoned amongst them. Bother series play things pretty light with a bright color palate to boot. However, you find that the humans are more than you would expect them to be in the series.
