Anime Series Like BokuBen: We Never Learn

In order to help his family out financially, Nariyuki Yuiga dedicated himself to becoming a high achiever in order to get a special nomination that covers future university fees. While he is constantly overshadowed by two other classmates in math and literature, he manages to get the nomination any with the condition he tutor these other students in other academic areas in which they are just mediocre.

Though it sounds like an easy harem set up, Bokuben is actually one of those deeper below the surface anime series. If nothing else, it has solid character development and great comedy. If you want more anime series like Bokuben, then head on down below.

For Fans of Tutors

The Quintessential Quintuplets

As his family is in some serious debt, Fuutaro Uesugi is a serious penny pincher. However, his great grades have landed him a higher than normal paying tutor job. The problem is that his five wards, all sisters, are dumb as door nails and think he is a complete idiot. However, to get his pay, he has to think of a way to get these five unique girls to study and learn.

Of all the series, The Quintessential Quintuplets will always be considered the most similar to Bokuben. The difference is that the girls are all sisters. Like Bokuben, each sister has their own academic strong point and has a great personality that really makes you so enamored with every character. Even the bitchy ones in the end.

The Royal Tutor

Heine Wittgenstein is the royal tutor in the court of king Grannzreich. Unfortunately for this little professor, he has a big job cut out for him by being in charge of the education for the king’s four distinctly personalitied sons.

This is essentially Bokuben, but with boys!. Each boy has his own quirks and the tutor must overcome them in order to teach them. It is a long and comedic road.

Great Teacher Onizuka

After becoming reformed from his rough and tumble past as a bike gang leader, Onizuka is looking for a new ambition in life. After witnessing a hot girl falling for her ugly teacher, he decides to become a teacher himself. However, instead of hot girls draping themselves all over him, he just has a group of problem students that the school administration had all but given up on.

While Onizuka isn’t a tutor, he is a teacher. Unlike Bokuben, Onizuka doesn’t really teach his incredibly smart students in academics, but rather he teaches them life lessons that they sorely need. Both Bokuben and Onizuka are great comedies and the characters all have amazing stories.

For Fans of Unique Harem Girls

Nisekoi

Ten years ago, Raku Ichijou made a promise with a childhood friend. In the present day, this heir apparent to an intimidating yakuza family continues to wait for his friend’s return while trying to be as uninvolved in family matters as possible. However, when a rival gang invades his family’s turf, the family leaders decide Raku should start a romantic relationship with the other chief’s daughter, Chitoge.

Both Nisekoi and Bokuben are very close to traditional harems, but they made each girl lovable and distinct in their characters. Furthermore, those characters change overtime and gradually, which makes for a great watch. Both shows are a little slow on romantic progression though.

When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace

On one extraordinary day, the four members of the Literature Club and the faculty advisor’s niece suddenly find themselves with supernatural powers. Each amazed with their own abilities, they try to solve the mystery of them, but very little else has changed in the day to day activities of the Literature Club.

I’ll be real with you, When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace suffers from a lack of romantic progression and some plot issues due to how the anime was made. However, if you are into harem anime series that show excellent character development similar to Bokuben, this could have been the finest example if not for the issues mentioned above.

Amagami SS

After being stood up on a Christmas Eve date, Juichi has a hard time opening himself up to romance. However, upon a chance meeting with several girls he is romantically interested in, he has hope that this year he can spend Christmas Eve with someone he truly loves.

As Amagami is an omnibus rather than a true harem, it is different from other harem series. However, both Amagami and Bokuben tell romance stories where the girls are actual characters and not just trying to remove the pants from the main character the whole time.

For Fans of Knowledge Gaps

Wise Man’s Grandchild

After being hit by a truck and killed, a young man was reincarnated into a new world as a baby. He was found and raised by a legendary sage named Merlin and given the name Shin. However, while Merlin taught him his skills and Shin grew in to an extremely powerful mage, living in the forest failed to teach Shin common sense and other people skills.

Both are new in the Spring 2019 season and they share the same trope. The characters that get the most focus are really good at some subjects, and just god awful bad at most others. However, in Wise Man’s Grandchild, it is not academics, but rather the main character is great at magic, but bad at common sense and social skills.

Kaguya-sama Love is War

Considered a genius, Miyuki Shirogane leads the student council in his prestigious school. Alongside his beautiful and wealth vice president, Kaguya Shinomiya, the two are regarded as the perfect couple despite no romantic relationship. The truth is, however, they both have feelings for each other, but neither can confess. This is the battle of two people trying to get the other to confess first!

What really ties these two together is that they are romance stories between very smart people. They also show that very smart people can be oh-so-incredibly dumb about certain things. In Bokuben, it is more so their bad subjects while in Kaguya-sama, it is about love and normal people activities.
