Anime Series Like Senryuu Girl

Yukishiro Nanako is cute and cheerful, but so shy she has become non-verbal. The only way she can express her thoughts is through haiku. Busujima Eiji is a delinquent in every way, except for the fact that he is kind and has never been in a fight. Together these two form the school’s literature club.

Although it suffers as a short-episode series, Senryuu Girl provides a number of cute wholesome moments to help you unwind from this season’s more tense anime series. If you want more anime recommendations, take your 5-7-5 syllables down below.

For Fans of Delinquents

D-Frag

Kazama thinks he has what it takes to take over his high school with his gang, even if it is just his two friends in it. However, when his gang has a run in with the four unique girls of the Game Development Club, he is shanghaied in as a member himself.

Both series are about clubs, though dedicated to different subjects. However, they are both tied together by the characters, one a delinquent and the other some kind odd girl. While both are also comedies, Senryuu Girl is the more wholesome one, and D-Frag is the funnier one.

Nisekoi

Ten years ago, Raku Ichijou made a promise with a childhood friend. In the present day, this heir apparent to an intimidating yakuza family continues to wait for his friend’s return while trying to be as uninvolved in family matters as possible. However, when a rival gang invades his family’s turf, the family leaders decide Raku should start a romantic relationship with the other chief’s daughter, Chitoge.

While both shows are technically about delinquents surrounded by women, the delinquents themselves are not what you would expect. They aren’t particularly tough and have kind hearts. However, Nisekoi is a romantic drama, albeit a slow moving one.

Clannad

Tomoya Okazaki is a delinquent who finds everything dull and believes he will never amount to anything, that is, until a girl named Nagisa catches his eye one day on his way to school. Suddenly, Tomoya begins to notice Nagisa more and more. She is sickly and weak, but she always tries her best in order to follow her dream of reviving the school’s drama club. Claiming he has nothing better to do, he decides to help Nagisa, and along the way ends up helping several other girls and potential drama club members. However, as he learns more about the girls and helps them overcome their problems, he might just be able to overcome his own as well.

Enjoyed watching a delinquent who isn’t really a tough guy being reformed by a girl her likes? Because that is what you get in Clannad too, but with way more drama and an actual romance. Senryuu just likes to imply the romance.

For Fans of Club Activities

Love, Chunibyou, and Other Delusions

Everyone has that stage in their life where they think themselves special, different from mere humans. In middle school, Yuuta Togashi thought himself the Dark Flame Master, but upon entering high school, he has grown out of it. Unfortunately, after a chance meeting with Rikka Takanashi, a girl believing to have a God in her eye, attaches herself to him and brings that Chunibyo past back out.

Both series are about excessively quirky people that find acceptance and friendship in each other. The real difference is how they are presented. Unlike Senryuu Girl, Chunibyou is really given a chance for its weird characters to be odd, but also grow as characters.

Haganai

Kodaka Hasegawa is anything but a delinquent. However, because of his blonde hair and bad boy face, he has been labeled as such. When classmates shiver in your presence, it makes it difficult to make friends. Yet, when Kodaka meets Yozora, a girl that is perhaps a bigger outcast than him, the pair start the Neighbors’ Club. In the Neighbors’ Club, those without any friends are invited to join, but not all personalities may mesh well.

In the simplest terms, the shows are about rounding up a bunch of weirdos in a club. You then watch them do club activities that may or may not actually fit towards that clubs purpose. Both Nanako and Eiji would probably fit in perfectly in the Haganai club too.

Gamers

This is the tale of lonely Keita Amano who loves video games and the video game club at his school that ardently tries to recruit him. While each member of the club is distinctly different, they are all united through their love of games.

While both series claim to be about club members doing club things, you soon learn that both series stop being about that. Gamers gets caught up in the romance and moves away from games and Senryuu Girl just likes to do random wholesome things.

For Fans of Quiet Girls

Miss Morita is Taciturn

Morita Mayu has a bit of a reputation of intimidating people by looking them straight in the eye. She rarely speaks too. Not because she doesn’t like to or can’t, but because she ends up thinking too much about what to say.

Essentially this series is Senryuu Girl without all the haikus and a delinquent second main character. You watch a girl try to express her feelings and fail oh-so-badly.

Kokoro Connect

One day, for seemingly no reason in particular, the members of the Cultural Research Club start randomly switching bodies with each other. It becomes utter chaos, especially when members of the opposite sex start switching. However, when you are wearing someone else’s skin, it is hard to keep your most guarded secrets inside.

Much of the frustration in Senryuu Girl is that no one expresses their feelings very well, and that is a huge premise in Kokoro Connect. You watch feelings come out in the oddest ways possible.
