Anime Series Like Planet With

Despite not having memories of his past, Souya lives a peaceful high school life. However, one day his town is threatened by huge objects floating in the sky. Conventional weapons are useless against them, but the 7 heroes charged with defending the city emerge in their mechs and head into battle. Souya, too, finds himself drawn to battle, but not against the objects, he is drawn to fight the heroes.

While confusing with its early storytelling and occasionally supremely absurd, Planet With presents a low-key almost-parody mecha anime with a surprisingly interesting world once you get into it. For anime recommendations like Planet With, look no further.

For Fans of Amnesia

07-Ghost

The Barsburg Empire’s Military Academy is famous for training elite soldiers to fight with an ability called Zaiphon. Though a slave with no memories of his past, Teito is one of these elite soldiers. However, after uncovering a dark secret of his own past and a murder of a high ranking officer happens soon after, Teito finds himself imprisoned. After escaping, he must scramble to evade others as well as uncover his memories in full.

Both series share an amnesiac main character, and like any amnesia plot, their memories hold crucial secrets to the present. However, while 07-Ghost isn’t mecha, it does rely on certain abilities to fight that are as special as a mech. The good news is that Ghost isn’t as confusing as Planet With can be, but it does have mysteries to unravel.

K

In this world, there are those referred to as Kings. They were individuals bestowed with great supernatural power and they use it to recruit others to their clan. To protect those members is a King’s great duty. However, after a murder of a Red clan member, a student is accused of homicide. During the man hunt, the city devolves into full-on war among the Kings.

Like Planet With, K is perhaps one of the most confusing anime series in the beginning and because it moves at such a clip, it can be hard to keep up. However, it does present a mystery to unravel, and you have a character with amnesia whose past is very relevant to the events unfolding.

Bungou Stray Dogs

The orphanage that Atsushi Nakajima has been living at has been recently plagued by a tiger that only he can see. Blaming him for the incident, they kick him out. Now homeless, he wanders the streets until he meets the eccentric Osamu Dazai and saves him from drowning. As it turns out, Dazai is a supernatural detective and agrees to help him solve the mystery.

While vastly different in setting and plot, these two series are connected by their amnesiac main characters. The characters and much of the plot depend on them uncovering something in their past that plays a crucial role in the mystery unfolding in the present. While also not seeming like it, Bungou Stray Dogs also packs a good bit of action as well.

For Fans of Intense Mecha

Toppa Tengen Gurren Lagann

Simon and Kamina were living boring lives in their deep underground village when, on an excavation dig, they find a mysterious object that turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient war machine. With their new weapon, the pair are able to fend off an attack from above, but upon catching a glimpse of the sky, they set off on an adventure that will take them out of this universe.

While Planet With has less manly speech, it actually has quite a bit in common with Gurren Lagann. Both shows are about an enemy that wants to prevent humanity from advancing, and they both have beautiful mech fighting. However, what really ties these two together is their passion for really dramatic visuals.

FLCL

After his brother moved to America, Naota was left to his own mundane existence with his grandfather and father in his small town. However, one day while walking home with Mamimi, his brother’s ex-girlfriend, Naota is hit by a Vespa. Its rider, a crazy pink haired woman, gets off, kisses him, smacks him on the head with her guitar, and then speeds away. This marks the end of Naota’s boring life and the beginning of a never-ending string of weird events.

Both Planet With and FLCL suffer from the same problem. New viewers have literally no idea what is going on. While Planet With has a confusing initial plot with bouts of absurdness, everything in FLCL is confusing at the beginning. Some may even still be confused at the end. However, both shows have a way of drawing you in so you have to know what is happening.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

The world is on the brink of destruction following the landing of the Angels, massive monsters that want nothing more than to kill and destroy. The only hope lies with the select few that can pilot government agency Nerv’s special Evangelion-type mechs. The pilot must be compatible in order to pilot the Evangelions, and for Nerv leader, Gendo Ikari, one of those compatible few is his son, Shinji. With the fate of mankind on his shoulders and fights that often mean death for the pilots, is 14-year-old Shinji up to the task?

While nowhere on the level of depth and darkness of NGE, Planet With actually uses its mecha storyline to get surprisingly philosophical. It is unexpected in its shounen-esque mecha package, but not unwelcomed. If you watched Planet With and want something darker and deeper, NGE is the choice.

For Fans of Heroes That Might Actually Be Villains

Terror in Resonance

After a terrorist attack on a Japanese nuclear facility, the country was paralyzed to act. After six months of searching for the perpetrators, the public is shown a video tape of two boys known as Sphinx that take credit for the attack. Threatening more mayhem, it is up to the police to catch these terrorists.

While Planet With makes you guess, Terror in Resonance makes no qualms about letting you know who the bad guys are. However, both shows do make you question if they are really villains. In both shows, the characters do things for a reason. Sometimes the characters don’t know the reason and sometimes it is just the audience left in the dark.

Psycho-Pass

In the 22nd century, the justice system has changed. The Sibyl System now determines the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for criminal intent. This has become known as their Psycho-Pass. Once criminal intent has been identified, Inspectors like Akane Tsunemori, are in charge of subjugating them. However, this tough job is not without dangers. This is why Inspectors are paired with Enforcers, like Shinya Kougami, latent criminals with just the right amount of psychopathy to keep other criminals in their place.

While Planet With is not nearly as morally ambiguous as Psycho-Pass, they both set up stories where you are meant to wonder who the real bad guys are. Is it the kid fighting against the protectors of a city? Is it the government that believes they should kill problems before they start? While Psycho-Pass is much darker, it is a joy to watch where both series end up.

Gunslinger Stratos

In the far future, Japan is now known as the 17th Far East Imperial City Management District. The citizens were promised a peaceful life, but that is ruined by the Degradation, a disease that causes humans to dissolve into ash. Tohru, once an ordinary student, finds himself involved in a battle between universes where he must face his alternate universe self. What will happen when these universes collide?

Both Stratos and Planet With have a set up in which you are not immediately provided with all the information. It makes good guys look like potential bad guys and, at times, it can be confusing. However, in both shows what draws you in is the fact that you want to see what comes next. However, Gunslinger Stratos dabbles a little less in the absurd.
