Sony Pictures gave spider-fans an inside look at the upcoming Into the Spider-Verse animated movie during their Hall H presentation Friday at Comic-Con International in San Diego. One unique aspect of the film is its take on the character at the center of the Spider-Verse itself, which will feature an older, wearier Peter Parker inside the Spider-Man costume.

Voice actor Jake Johnson, who plays Peter in the film, gave his account of the character’s nature. “This is Peter Parker at 40,” Johnson said. “This is Peter with a bad back who doesn’t know if he wants to be Spider-Man anymore, and then he meets Miles who needs a mentor and Peter doesn’t really want to be a mentor but he sees something really special in this guy.”

Johnson’s explanation of his incarnation of Peter is significantly different from the younger, more jovial version traditionally seen in the comics and other media. His comic book counterpart seems entrenched in his late 20’s or early 30’s, and Tom Holland’s take on Spidey in Sony’s live action films takes the character all the way back to his teenage years. And Spider-Man is largely known as a wisecracking crimefighter, uttering clever quips even as he webs criminals up for the police to apprehend.

The comics have shown, though, that the whole nature of a Spider-Verse lends itself to alternate takes on the character, and an older and crankier Peter Parker is actually one of the more subtle alterations.

Into the Spider-Verse also stars Nicolas Cage, Liev Scheiber, and Lily Tomlin, among others, and is directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman. Written by Phil Lord, the film is scheduled for release on December 14.
