Grant Morrison (and the New 52 Superman?) Join DC’s Sideways In October

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio dropped a bit of a bombshell on fans during the company’s New Age of Heroes panel Saturday at Comic-Con International in San Diego. The publisher’s new line of comics will add Sideways Annual #1 to its repertoire this fall, with the issue to be written by series scribe DiDio along with Multiversity creator Grant Morrison. Perhaps more notably, the annual will send the series protagonist into DC’s Dark Multiverse and will feature a very familiar looking “New 52” character from Morrison’s run on Action Comics.

An image shared Saturday on DC’s Twitter account shows the character of Sideways fighting alongside a tee-shirt and blue jeans-clad Superman, drawn by Andy Kubert. Morrison’s run on Action Comics featured Superman adorned in a very similar outfit. During the panel, DiDio wouldn’t confirm whether the version of Superman to be featured in the annual is the same as Morrison’s.

“This book has lots of ties to (Dark Nights): Metal,” DiDio stated in Saturday’s panel, “So we slide into the Dark Multiverse. In Sideways we’re going to see the dark version of Superman characters.” DiDio’s statement indicates that this, in fact, might not be the New 52 version of the character, but instead a similar-looking Dark Multiverse counterpart.

The New Age of Heroes line of comics was originally branded as the “Dark Matter” line, stemming from DC Comics’ Dark Nights: Metal event. With its origins tied to the Dark Multiverse, Sideways’ ability to traverse dimensions, the likelihood of the Dark Multiverse popping up seemed all but inevitable.

Sideways Annual #1 is scheduled to go on sale October 31.
