17 Upcoming Anime Series to Look Forward to in 2017

2016 may have been a dumpster fire of a year for everything else, but not for anime. With any luck, we can have another good anime watching year in 2017, and it already looks pretty impressive.

While some shows may be pushed back enough that they dip into 2018, as it stands now, there are tons of amazing new series and follow-up seasons for hit anime series coming in 2017.

So what upcoming anime series should you look forward to for the new year?

1. Attack on Titan Season 2 – April 2017

Although it was originally supposed to come out in 2016, Attack on Titan Season 2 has been pushed back multiple times until it was finally confirmed for the Spring Season of 2017.

Yet, for as hyped as the majority of the anime community is, there are still some chronic worriers out there. The biggest worry is if Attack on Titan will stick to its source material since the manga hasn’t exactly chugged along since the first season.

Hopefully, much was learned from Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, and other filler-palooza’s like D.Gray Man, Bleach, and Naruto. Creating an original story makes for an okay story, but nothing pleases fans more than showing the story the mangaka intended to tell.

2. One Punch Man Season 2 – TBA 2017

Remember when the second season of One Punch Man was announced and the hype was real for a few days before it dropped off the face of the Earth? While it is still coming, but there some speculation as to if it will actually come in 2017.

You might do well to expect late 2017 if not 2018 for this one because there has been virtually zero information about it thrown out there.

3. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! Season 2 – January 2017

Bright and colorful, energetic and weird, KonoSuba is back for a second season, and unexpectedly fast, too! Likely to be another 10-episode series like the first season, expect the series to keep chugging along with its source material, although it doesn’t have too much more to adapt after this unless the puts in a lot of filler.

4. My Hero Academia Season 2 – April 2017

Although popular in its own respect, many people didn’t think My Hero Academia would get a second season quite so quickly, not like its dwarfing competition One Punch Man, anyway. However, here it is, and it’s time to get on the Sports Festival Arc hype train.

5. Blue Exorcist Season 2 – January 2017

Blue Exorcist was one of those series that got a good first season that people liked. As it ended in a somewhat acceptable way, most people watched it and moved on to something else. Then, randomly six years later, it gets a second season.

Why? So random. Well, whatever. It should be a nice 12-episode return.

6. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection (Season 3) – TBA 2017

If I remember my Code Geass right, and it has been awhile since I watched it, it seemed like a pretty neat little ending. However, this third season will take place several years after the second season and advance the story further. While many fans wait almost vibrating with excitement, others sit with bated breath.

The major worry that many fans have is about the writer, who is returning for the third season, but hasn’t exactly thrived with his other works like Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and Valvrave the Liberator. They worry is that he has lost his touch and might tarnish an otherwise epic series.

7. Seven Deadly Sins Season 2 – TBA 2017

Technically, Seven Deadly Sins has a brief sequel in 2016 called “Signs of the Holy War,” but it was only four episodes. The titled “Seven Deadly Sins 2,” promises to be a bit more substantial as it continues on with the manga, which is currently on hiatus.

8. FLCL Season 2 – Late 2017

Oh, yes. This bad boy is coming in 2017 too, supposedly. This time it’s not a short OVA that barely makes sense, but a TV series with an unconfirmed episode count.

This sequel takes place “many years” after the events of the previous FLCL, but the war between Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages on. Instead of starring Naota, this series will star an apathetic girl named Hidomi who ends up with a new teacher, the veritably insane Haruko who has finally returned to Earth.

9. Yuna Yuki is a Hero Season 2 – March (?) 2017

If you need a magical girl fix in 2017, you’ll get it via YuYuYu. Unfortunately, the actual sequel is confirmed to be only six episodes, but they are also releasing a prequel that will also be six episodes. It is unknown if they will release these together in a Danganronpa 3 Past-Future arc affair, but it seems likely since it metes out to a typical 12 episodes.

10. Yamishibai Season 4 – January 2017

If you’ve been casually browsing Recommend Me Anime since our Halloween Horror Fest that took over October 2016, then you already might suspect that we have a soft spot for Yamishibai.

Although the “experimental” animation can put some off, it does wonderfully master telling chilling short horror stories in only five-minute episodes. It is probably not a stretch to expect any less from its fourth season.

11. Steins;Gate 0 – TBA 2017

Steins;Gate 0 presents an intriguing alternate ending to the series in which Okabe gives up being a mad scientist after failing to save Kurisu. However, after trying to forget the past, he meets an acquaintance of Kurisu that lures him back into science only to have the anguish renewed again.

While the release date has yet to be confirmed, the game/visual novel that it is based on actually recently came out.

12. Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel – TBA 2017

Although technically a movie, the last arc of the Fate/Stay series will be released in a 3-part movie starting in 2017. The arc adapts the darkest route of the novels where you can expect death and despair to reign throughout.

13. Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Season 2 – April 2017

This is another sequel that was set to air in 2016, but was eventually pushed back to Spring 2017, but best girl Megumi is worth the wait, right? Originally it was of an unknown format, but later confirmed to be a TV series that will continue on from its light novel source material.

Presumably the delay was in order to let more volumes of the light novel release, as is often the case with these things.

14. Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul (Season 2) – TBA 2017

Aside from a PV, information on the second season of Rage of Bahamut has been relatively low key. However, the PV did show that the series is primarily going to be about the fall-out from the events of season one when Bahamut tried to destroy the world.

More specifically, it is set 10 years in the future and explores the characters you know and love navigating a world that is still not quite Utopia.

15. Space Battleship Yamato 2202 – February 2017

Space Battleship Yamato 2202 is probably not something you’ll find while perusing Crunchyroll, but if you are a fan of the series, you will definitely want to hunt this one down. This new series will have a 7-part theatrical release in Japan starting on February 25th and going throughout 2017.

16. Legend of the Galactic Heroes – TBA 2017

If you have watched the original show about the never-ending war of the Galactic Empire and Free Planet’s Alliance, then you have seen everything there is to see. This is not a continuation (there is nothing else to adapt), but rather a remake.

The good news is the Legend of the Galactic Heroes is already and awesome story, and Production I.G can make it look really nice.

17. Berserk – April 2017

It’s okay even if you’re a Berserk fan if you are not terribly excited about the continuation. The animation can be a bit grating and clunky at times, but you’ll get to see one more arc of the manga animated, and this time, Gutts gets his Berserker armor.

While all these new sequels and seasons are pretty awesome, don’t forget that each new year of anime comes with its little surprises.
